Synopsis

Course Outline

Safe(r) Practices: 2SLGBTQ+ Fundamentals+, is a half-day (4 hour) course for cross sector awareness and skills development in relation to 2SLGBTQ+ experiences within informal and formal dispute resolution mechanisms. This course has been carefully formulated to help build cultural humility and develop a queer and trans-specific trauma-informed lens for your practice. Attendees will learn about the ways in which sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics inform the experiences of clients/colleagues, the ways in which intersectionality informs intracommunity conflict and how to build meaningful professional relationships with the community. It is an interactive course with case studies and roleplays and activities throughout, and includes resources for you to apply to your practice.

This is a part of a series of DDRIOC courses that will explore cultural sensitivities and how to combat biases in our own practices. In our pilot course, Intercultural Communication and Diversity for Professionals, we dive deeper into Indigenous culture, anti-black racism and disabilities. We spend some time in these areas to raise important issues and provide helpful tools for better communication strategies to use in workplaces and in your personal lives. These courses are the building blocks for developing mindful practices within diversity and inclusion in Canada and beyond.

Course Format

The course is currently being held virtually on Zoom. We will meet for a single half-day (4 hours), with health breaks built in. Attendees will be supplied with course materials and will be given exercises for participation. Our role-plays and case studies will be held in virtual rooms, in small and large groups.

Certification

Completion of this course will give you 4 hours forwards your CED (Continued Education in Diversity) hours, that will help you maintain your ADF (Accredited Diversity Facilitator™) designation. If you do not have the ADF certification, you will be issued with an online certificate to mark your achievement.
